Beyond Ideas of Wrong Doing

Beyond Ideas of Wrong Doing: Betty Steinkrauss Brown’s Letters from a Bangladesh Orphanage and Shelter for Women and Children  2012

Edited by Margot E Wilson, PhD

Betty Steinkrauss Brown went to Bangladesh in 1977 to work for one year. In the end, she stayed for 17 years; first as the Director of an orphanage and afterwards as the Founder and Director of a shelter for abandoned women and children.

This is the story of Betty’s experiences in Bangladesh told through the letters she wrote to her family in Canada. The stories unfold slowly over time, following the same chronological and serial installment format in which events occurred and the letters were written and received.

Women’s biography often tends to be retrospective, produced as a whole at some later point in time, often far removed in time and place from the events themselves. By contrast, Beyond Ideas of Wrong Doing brings together aspects of both life writing and autobiography in a way that offers readers an intimate view into one woman’s extraordinary life experiences.
